Atlanta
revolves around retail. This city is undoubtedly the most
prominent shopping destination in the entire Southeast, easily
ranking with shopping meccas like New York and Los Angeles. From
huge department stores to quaint little boutiques, Atlanta has a
gigantic array of shopping opportunities fit for all ages and
price ranges.
Situated
underneath the busy streets of downtown is a six-square-block
area known as Underground Atlanta, where you will find many
impressive retailers. From traditional stores to vendor carts
with specialty items, you can enjoy a whole afternoon shopping
this subterranean district. Also located downtown is the
climate-controlled Peachtree Center Shopping Mall, where you
will find many traditional stores and fine dining.
Don’t
miss shopping in eclectic Little Five Points, south of the
Virginia-Highlands in Midtown, where you will find a bunch of
shops selling specialty items of all sorts. Don’t forget to
check out the entire Virginia-Highland area as well for its
interesting shops.
North
of Midtown is the neighborhood of Buckhead, which has been
referred to as the shopping center of the Southeast. Here the
shopper finds Phipps Plaza, often called the fashion center of
Atlanta, in addition to a number of upscale traditional shops
and specialty fashion shops. Also located in Buckhead is the
revered Lenox Square, known as the “town square.” The square
is more than 40 years old and carries plenty of merchandise for
everyone.
Many
visitors are unaware that Atlanta is great for locating
collectibles and antiques. Also prominent here are the many flea
markets scattered throughout town. So be sure to really scour
the city, not just the shopping malls, for you are bound to
stumble upon that item you just can’t live without.
